This project involved renovating an old factory building and refurbishing it as a shop. So far, that sounds like a relatively common scenario, but what is special about this project is its rigorous pursuit of a circular system based on a zero-waste approach. Almost all of the finishing materials and fittings—down to handles and window sashes—are reused items, primarily materials formerly used at this factory facility. Unlike designs that merely mimic the vintage look of an abandoned building, the power of this place lies in its composition of items with real memories attached to them, making it unique in design terms. As well as being a trial for a fully fledged zero-emissions initiative, it achieves a high standard as a design. We recognized it as a project that will serve as an excellent precedent for future zero-emissions designs.

古い工場建築をリノベーションしショップへと改装したプロジェクト。そこまでなら割合によくある話であるが、この作品が特別なのは廃棄物を極力出さない循環型システムの徹底的な追求にある。操作対象であるかつての工場施設で使われていた物質を主として、空間の仕上げやしつらえ、取手やサッシュまで、ほとんど全ての素材はリユース品でできている。廃屋らしさをデザイン的に擬態するいわゆるビンテージ風の見せかけのデザインとは違って、本当の記憶を有した物品群からなる場の力はデザインとしても唯一無二のものとなっている。本格的なゼロエミッショントライアルであり、尚且つ、デザインとしてもレベルが高い。今後のゼロエミデザインの良い先例となるプロジェクトとして評価した。
